DESCRIPTION

USER PRODUCTIVITY

ERGONOMIC DESIGN AND SCREEN FLICKER: Today's widespread move to applications based on graphical user interfaces and higher screen resolutions places greater demands on the ergonomic design of visual subsystems. High resolution graphics modes and white screen backgrounds can promote more noticeable screen flicker, a condition that may affect user productivity. Flicker, however, can be reduced by increasing the screen refresh rate--the number of times per second that the screen image is redrawn. Flicker can also be reduced by non-interlaced scanning--or drawing the whole screen image in one pass. Reducing screen flicker can improve user productivity.

The IBM PS/2 XGA-2 Display Adapter/A supports higher refresh rates up to 75Hz for use with appropriate monitors. Also, the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A now supports non-interlaced scanning in 1024 x 768 mode. Higher refresh rates and non-interlaced scanning combine to enhance ergonomic benefits to the customer in the form of enhanced usability and potential productivity gains.

PERFORMANCE: The IBM PS/2 XGA Display Adapter/A set a new standard for high performance video subsystems, providing the high-performance graphics and high screen content demanded by graphical user interfaces in Operating System/2® (OS/2®) Presentation Manager®, Microsoft Windows, AIX® and other environments. Optimized for windowing and high resolution performance, XGA features:

  • Faster VGA
  • Dual-port video memory (VRAM)
  • Bus mastering
  • Drawing acceleration (coprocessor)
  • Hardware cursor (sprite)
  • Application device drivers.

The XGA-2 Display Adapter/A further enhances the performance benefits of several of the key features. Performance of the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A advanced function modes is over twice the performance at the application level, due to faster VRAMs, memory controller redesign, improved busmastering, more efficient coprocessor polling, and significant tuning of the device drivers.

Also, XGA-2 Display Adapter/A provides full coprocessor support for direct color mode, allowing customers the benefit of 640 x 480 resolution with 65,536 colors at a performance level comparable to XGA 640 x 480 with 256 colors.

® Registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.

CLARITY AND READABILITY: The IBM PS/2 XGA-2 Display Adapter/A provides improved 132 column text support. While the adapter still supports the 8-pixel character resolutions of XGA Display Adapter/A, it also provide a 9-pixel character resolutions of 1188 x 200, 1188 x 350, and 1188 x 400. This will further improve the clarity and readability of the text.

GROWTH ENABLEMENT

COLOR ENHANCEMENTS: The announcement of XGA Display Adapter/A enabled customers to take advantage of an increasing number of applications with graphical user interfaces, higher screen content, and more colors. XGA Display Adapter/A was upgradeable to 640 x 480 with 65,536 colors and 1024 x 768 with 256 colors by means of an extra-charge memory feature, the PS/2 Video Memory Expansion Option.

Displaying up to 65,536 colors at once (16-bit color mode) can yield a high-color, lifelike display of scanned or captured color images. The XGA-2 Display Adapter/A provides the same capabilities with 1MB of VRAM on the standard adapter for no additional charge. And 16-bit color mode is now supported by OS/2 and Windows device drivers.

The XGA-2 Display Adapter/A also features 8-bit digital-to-analog converters (DACs), versus the 6-bit DACs used by XGA Display Adapter. With 8-bit DACs, the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A now supports a palette of 16.7 million possible color combinations of which 256 can be displayed at any one time. (the XGA Display Adapter allows 256 of a possible 262,144 colors.) Similarly, the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A provides 256 possible shades of grey, compared with XGA Display Adapter's 64 shades.

ERGONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS - STANDARDS: With the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A, customers have a growth path to current and new applications that use enhanced-color modes. The XGA-2 Display Adapter/A and the new 95XX family of monitors are designed to meet stringent ergonomic and environmental requirements of emerging international standards, such as the International Standards Organization (ISO). The software supplied with the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A automatically exploits IBM 85XX and 95XX monitors at the best resolution and refresh rate possible for the monitor attached.

Supported resolutions detailed above that are not available on IBM displays, are available with some non-IBM (OEM) displays. These displays range in capability from low cost/low function to high cost/high function. Most of these displays respond as an IBM 8514 display when queried by the software supplied with the XGA-2 subsystem. As a result, IBM 8514 resolutions and refresh rates are used as default.

The software supplied with the IBM XGA-2 Display Adapter/A, allows the user to override the default screen resolution. Overriding with a resolution which does not meet (or exceeds) the capability of the attached display, can yield unpredictable results.

WARNING: Some multi frequency displays may appear to function correctly, however damage may occur over time.

  • The user must only select resolutions which are suitable for the display attached to the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A.
  • The use of the resolution override should be avoided if the display attached to the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A is to be changed frequently with displays of varying characteristics.

The IBM PS/2 XGA-2 Display Adapter/A along with certain IBM displays, computers and some software has been certified to meet the International Standards Organization (ISO) standard 9241/3. IBM cannot guarantee that all OEM and 63XX displays attached to the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A will provide acceptable front of screen characteristics or meet the ISO 9241/3 standard.

Refer to the PS/2 Hardware Interface Technical Reference - Video Subsystem (S42G-2193), for more details on resolution and monitor support.

The following table provides details of the IBM PS/2 displays mentioned above:

COMPATIBILITY:

Hardware Compatibility - While providing additional capabilities, the XGA-2 Display Adapter/A is fully compatible with the XGA Display Adapter/A. (Refer to the PS/2 Hardware Interface Technical Reference - Video Subsystem, S42G-2193-00, for additional information.)

In VGA mode, XGA-2 Display Adapter/A is fully compatible with XGA Display Adapter/A. No application modifications are required.

In 132 column text mode, XGA-2 Display Adapter/A supports the same 8-pixel characters and resolutions (1056x200, 1056x350, 1056x400) as XGA. In addition, XGA-2 Display Adapter/A provides 9-pixel characters with resolutions of 1188x200, 1188x350, and 1188x400. 132 column text mode can be displayed with either ISO or non-ISO refresh rates, but should be invoked only when the attached monitor can accept the appropriate video rates. Refer to the Display Units Supported section for details on video rates.

IBM recommends that applications developers use the BIOS mode 14h call to invoke 132 column text mode to ensure future compatibility. Applications written to XGA hardware for 132 column support (1056 PELS) will also get 1056 PELS with XGA-2 hardware. Applications written to BIOS mode 14h will get 1056 PEL on XGA hardware and 1188 PELS on XGA-2 hardware.

In extended graphics mode, XGA-2 Display Adapter/A supports all the same functions as the XGA Display Adapter/A and provides the following additional capabilities:

  • Enhanced coprocessor support for 16-bit direct color mode.
  • Enhanced DACs for expanded color selection.

Application modifications may be required depending on the type of monitor attached (refer to the Software Compatibility section).

The following XGA device drivers will provide XGA function when used with XGA-2 Display Adapter/A and existing PS/2 85XX monitors:

  • OS/2 1.3 Presentation Manager XGA device driver (requires installation of CSD # XR05100 for OS/2 SE v1.3 or CSD # WR05100 for OS/2 EE v1.3)
  • OS/2 2.00 Presentation Manager XGA device driver
  • Microsoft Windows 3.0 XGA device driver
  • AutoCAD release 10 XGA device driver.

No application or driver modifications are required for extended graphics mode on existing PS/2 monitors. Support of new 95XX monitors, however, requires modification to applications and device drivers to implement Display Mode Query and Set (DMQS), a comprehensive new method for identifying monitor and display adapter characteristics. DMQS better enables applications and drivers to maintain compatibility with changes in adapter and monitor products. (Refer to the PS/2 Video Subsystem Technical Reference, S42G-2193-00, for additional information.)

IBM recommends that XGA-2 applications be written to the API's of OS/2 Presentation Manager and Microsoft Windows rather than to the XGA-2 hardware registers or the XGA-2 DOS AI. If writing to the hardware registers, consult the PS/2 XGA Adapter Interface Technical Reference, S15F-2154-00, to ensure XGA/XGA-2 register compatibility. The XGA-2 DOS AI does not support 132 column text mode or direct color mode.
